Secondary Level Highlights

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning gives students opportunities to apply their knowledge through hands-on experiences, real-world connections, and meaningful work beyond the traditional classroom. These experiences help students consolidate their learning while developing independence, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Intersession

Intersession is a dedicated period for students to deepen their learning through immersive, hands-on experiences. Students continue working on year-long projects, including Community, Personal, Passion, Bridge, and activity-based projects, while also participating in staff-led mini-courses that offer focused exploration of topics beyond the standard curriculum. Students also complete academic work in areas such as mathematics, English, and world language. Intersession gives students the time and space to explore interests, take initiative, and make meaningful connections across their learning.

Travel & Field Studies

Travel and field studies extend learning into new environments, cultures, and communities. Students in Grades 6–8 participate in trips to destinations such as Los Angeles, Boston, and New York, while Grades 9–10 take part in a Natural Environments Field Study with locations that vary from year to year. In Grades 11–12, students participate in an international, student-guided cultural experience that encourages independence, exploration, and meaningful engagement with another culture. Camping experiences also give students opportunities to build community, develop independence, and learn through shared experiences beyond campus.

Service & Global Citizenship

Service at Bowman is an important expression of global citizenship and responsible citizenship. Students are encouraged to recognize their role within their communities and consider how their knowledge, skills, and interests can contribute to the lives of others. Through service experiences, students move from learning about the world to participating in it, developing empathy, responsibility, and a sense of connection to the broader community.
