COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISING

GRADES 9 — 12

At Bowman, we believe students are more than their college applications

College & Career Advising at Bowman encourages students to explore both their academic interests and the passions that make them who they are. Students are not expected to define their entire future at a young age. Instead, they are encouraged to ask questions, try new things, discover connections between their interests, and remain open to where those interests may lead.

The goal is for students to graduate not only prepared for their next step, but as curious, engaged, and well-rounded people.

College & Career Advising at Bowman begins with getting to know each student.

Students and parents work with Bowman’s College & Career Advisor starting in Grade 9 to explore their interests, strengths, goals, and possibilities for life after high school. Advising is individualized and includes both students and families, with opportunities for one-on-one meetings, group programming, parent education, and conversations about college and career planning. The goal is not simply to help students get into college; we help students develop a thoughtful understanding of themselves and make choices that reflect who they are and what they hope to explore.

Students meet with the Academic and College Advisor at least once a grading period for dedicated planning and check-ins. Parents, as key partners in the college and post-Secondary advising process, are invited for discussion at least once a semester.

Further, students meet with their Cohort Advisors once a week during dedicated Advisory blocks. During Advisory, students work on valuable and transferable skills in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision-making. Parents meet with Cohort Advisors at least quarterly.

GRADE-BY-GRADE PLANNING

Bowman partners with IvyWise to provide guidance to students; part of their model is to provide guidance to students directly (all counselors are former admissions officers from institutions of higher ed).
