Primary Level Highlights

Social-Emotional Learning

Education for peace is a foundational component of a Bowman education at all levels. In our Primary Level, the teaching of peace, social justice, and global citizenship is based on fostering respect for all people and living things, and helping children learn the tools for peaceful conflict resolution.

Leadership Opportunities

Working with younger children enhances older children’s leadership skills. In their third year of the Children's House program, Kindergarten students take on leadership roles, applying what they’ve learned over their previous years. The curriculum is tailored to their development, introducing advanced concepts to prepare them for the Elementary Level. By the end of Primary, they are well-prepared to advance to the next level.

Coming-Ins

Because our youngest students are not yet ready for traditional field trips, Bowman brings the world to them. Coming-Ins invite community members and local organizations into the classroom, giving children hands-on opportunities to learn from firefighters, police officers, waste and recycling professionals, marine scientists, and more. These visits make learning tangible, engaging, and connected to the world beyond the classroom.

Connecting with Nature

Nature is woven into everyday life at Bowman. Children spend time observing and caring for plants and animals, exploring the outdoors, gardening, and using the natural world as an extension of their classroom. These experiences encourage curiosity and help children build a deeper understanding of and connection to their environment.

Community Engagement

Children begin learning what it means to be a contributing member of a community from an early age. Classroom jobs give students meaningful opportunities to care for their shared environment, while everyday traditions, such as preparing a special snack for classmates on their birthday, encourage generosity, responsibility, and belonging.

At Bowman School, our Children’s House community grounds real-world learning in the Montessori tradition by welcoming community guests right to our campus. Whether observing the mechanical precision of the garbage truck or meeting the local fire department, our children approach these visits as extensions of their Practical Life and Sensorial experiences. We prepare the children beforehand, allowing them to practice Grace and Courtesy as they welcome, listen to, and thank our guests. These up-close encounters transform abstract concepts into concrete experiences, satisfying the young child's natural desire to understand their real environment. By safely exploring these impressive vehicles and meeting community helpers, our students build confidence, expand their spoken language, and develop a deep, respectful connection to the broader world around them.
