Children's House

Children ages 12 weeks — 6 years old begin developing important skills that are fundamental to all learning: concentration, a sense of order, coordination, confidence, and independence.

Children have the capability to learn quickly and almost effortlessly through activity; they are encouraged to be sensorial explorers, learning through the engagement of their senses. Our classrooms offer a wide variety of hands-on activities and materials designed to meet each child’s individual needs and periods of readiness. Children’s House students are free to work independently within a structured environment, doing real activities with an intelligent purpose.

Children's House Programs

Infant Program (12 weeks—18 Months)

Our Infant classroom is a calm, secure space designed to support your child’s earliest experiences with movement, language, and connection. Montessori-trained educators offer individualized attention and care, fostering trust, responsive communication, and early independence. The environment encourages safe exploration with materials and routines that support the development of gross motor skills, visual focus, and early language.

Daily routines such as feeding, diapering, and napping are consistent and respectful, helping infants build a strong sense of order, security, and belonging.

Toddler Program (18 Months—3 Years)

As children become more mobile and curious, the Toddler classroom offers increasing opportunities for independence, movement, and purposeful activity.
Through hands-on work and thoughtful guidance, toddlers develop concentration, coordination, language, and social-emotional skills. Freedom within limits allows them to make choices and practice independence in dressing, toileting, and caring for their environment. Montessori materials are designed to match their developmental needs and natural desire to “do it myself,” nurturing confidence and joy in learning.

Family partnership is essential during these foundational years, and we support parents through communication, education, and opportunities for connection.

Preschool & Kindergarten (3—6 Years)

Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten students work and learn together. Children receive small group and one-on-one lessons in core subjects. Each student reads one-on-one with a teacher each day for at least 15 minutes. Children plan out their day to begin practicing time management. Special attention is paid to the natural world with observation and care of plants and animals, outdoor play and exploration, and opportunities for gardening.

Children's House Curriculum

Math

Math is logic, sequence, and order. The young child’s mind is innately mathematical. Development drives the young child to absorb, manipulate, classify, order, sequence, abstract, and repeat. Montessori materials take advantage of these tendencies by presenting discrete concepts, proceeding from the sensorial and concrete to the abstract, and using precise lessons that offer keys to exploration and planning for repetition. A hands-on emphasis dominates the entire Children’s House sequence, and the passage to abstraction (math work without the use of materials) is considered developmental and proceeds individually for each child. Preceding lessons and work in practical life and sensorial provide direct preparation for work in mathematics.

Language

Complex spoken language is a human capability. The mental capacity for creating language is unique; it allows the child to speak the language of their culture correctly. The sensitive period for language development is from birth to six years of age, and in this period, the child absorbs and learns language with very little effort. Therefore, in the Children’s House, the initial focus of language is on spoken language and vocabulary enrichment. Phonological study leads to writing, reading, and the function of words.

Science

Social Sciences

The goal of the geography curriculum at this level is to introduce geographical concepts through a concrete sensorial approach. We first give the big picture (land, air, and water) and gradually move to details like the names of continents, oceans, or states. An awareness of the physical features of the earth is built through concrete exploration of land/water formations and maps. The study of culture is integrated with Practical Life and strives to provide children with multi-sensory impressions of the people, lands, and cultures of other nations.

Practical Life

At Bowman, children learn to independently care for themselves and their environment through the exercises of practical life. These activities provide opportunities for the development of concentration, fine and gross muscle coordination, a sense order including an orderly work cycle, independence, and attention to detail. The exercises of practical life support the child's natural development of executive function skills. Thus, the activities of practical life lay the foundation for all other future academic work. Practical life is the starting point for the youngest members of the class. Children continually develop and refine the skills of practical life throughout their time in Children’s House.
